WORLD WAR I TRENCH AND MILITARIA DISPLAYS
World War I Trench
Enter the WWI trench set somewhere in France in 1916. Conditions are appalling, soon you will become caked
in mud. A medical orderly tends one of the wounded
from last night’s raid. Pte. Taylor observes enemy movements through his periscope while Cpl. Harvey
cooks breakfast over a brazier.
War Time Displays
View the displays of Militaria commemorating battles from Waterloo to
the Gulf. During Queen Victoria’s reign the Empire encompassed a quarter
of the globe. The Royal Navy, Army and Royal Marines were deployed on
every continent. Campaign and gallantry medals displayed commemorate
many of the famous battles of the era including the Peninsular War,
the Crimea, the Indian Mutiny, campaigns in India and the North West
Frontier and the
China campaigns
including the Royal
Marines Defence
of Legations (Boxer
Rebellion 1900).
The Anderson Shelter
The Anderson shelter was designed in 1938 in
response to a request from the Home Office. It was
named after Sir John Anderson, then
Lord Privy Seal with special responsibility
for preparing air-raid precautions
immediately prior to the outbreak
of World War II.
They were issued with corrugated
sheets and families had to put them
together themselves, digging them
down into the back garden.
Consequently being partly
underground they often became
flooded. When the siren sounded
the family would hastily
collect a thermos and
sandwiches which had
been prepared earlier.
