40S AND 50S SHOPPING ARCADE

The more recent upstairs shopping arcade was mainly purchased from a small museum in Ashton-under-Lyme.

Some of you may recognise the restricting corsets from your Grandma’s time. One of the first bakelite TVs took pride of place in the early fifties. The iconic kitchen cupboard has now disappeared from today’s kitchens. Notice the wartime utility mark on the shoes and clothes which continued after the war.

Shopping was still

a leisurely activity

where you were served with the goods by an assistant and did not

help yourself unlike

today’s supermakets.

The Coronation of

Elizabeth II in 1953

was commemorated

with many souvenirs including the doll

on display.
